||Adolescence, ADHD, Driving and Cell Phones: A lethal combination. |

Adolescents with ADHD are at risk for a number of areas of functional impairment including academic under- achievement, social difficulties, substance use, and psychiatric comorbidities. Perhaps the most consequential of these impairments is driving. Indeed, adolescents with ADHD have dramatically increased risk for being involved
in single motor vehicle accidents and an even greater risk of being involved in repeated motor vehicle accidents.
This presentation will present results from a driving simulator study examining the driving behavior of adolescents
with ADHD compared to typically developing controls. Besides demonstrating poorer driving performance, especially when given the opportunity for distraction, the mechanism behind poorer driving performance was studied. Data will
be presented demonstrating that it is frequent extended glances away from the roadway that lead to driving
impairments among adolescents with ADHD. Some innovative strategies for addressing driving impairments in
patients with ADHD will be presented.
